Why the Harmonica?

Everywhere we go, music surrounds us, and I couldn’t imagine a life without it, it is always around us, whether it is plating in the background or bringing people together. I am choosing to play the harmonica because, if played correctly, it sounds beautiful. It’s also small and light, which makes it easy to take anywhere, perfect for casual moments and outdoor settings. I grew up sitting around campfires and listening to country and folk music, and those moments are some of my favorite memories. Theres something special about sitting outside at night, listening to music and just enjoying the moment. Due to this, I thought it would be a good idea to learn the harmonica so I can play a tune under the stars, surrounded by friends and a fire.

So far, I haven’t learned how to play a song, but I have watched a few videos for beginners. My first impression was that it’s harder than expected, trying to get the right sound and controlling my breath has been difficult. My goal for this project is to understand the notes better and hopefully be able to play a complete song. I will be playing a diatonic harmonica, also known as a 10-hole blues harmonica. To help me learn, I am going to watch beginner videos and follow lessons from Harmonica.com. My plan is to practice every day and stay consistent so I can continue to improve.

Learning the harmonica has had a steeper learning curve than  I expected. I didn’t realize how much coordination was needed as far as the inhaling, exhaling, and knowing when to breathe in between notes. As I mentioned last week, I am slowly learning from watching videos, and I’ve been listening to music with harmonicas in it.

The video 7 Days to Learning Harmonica (Beginner Lesson) has been helpful because it breaks down each step and gives you a small challenge every day. It makes the learning more manageable. I am currently not practicing as much as I’d like, but I’m pushing myself when I do.

Below is a video of me practicing day 3 of 7 in the video.

I’m currently on day 5. The tutorial has been basic, but I am learning lots, knowing that these skills will bridge the gap to more intermediate skills. Day 5 has been the most challenging so far, mainly because it requires better control of breathing and timing.
